Super Eagles defender Ola Aina is expecting a very difficult game against Cameroon on Saturday in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Round of 16 fixture at the Alexandria Stadium.
Both countries finished runner-up in their respective groups despite being rated to top, and low fire power is a constant variable in both camps with only two goals in each team’s kitty.
The Torino defender is ‘positive’ the three-time African champions will return to winning ways against the Indomitable Lions this weekend. Nigeria had the edge from the last two meetings, during the 2018 FIFA World Cup African qualifying series, the Super Eagles lashed the Lions 4-0 in Uyo and were forced to a 1-1 draw in Yaounde.
“This game won’t be the same with the World Cup qualifiers, we won’t go into the game thinking we have it because we had good results over them previously. Football is a funny game, we are taking all information seriously, and I hope on Saturday we can get the win. This is a different opponent with a new coach, but we’ll come out top,” said Aina to Naijafootballplus.com.
Nigeria and Cameroon share eight African titles between them. While the Indomitable Lions have won five times (1984, 1988, 2000, 2002 and 2017), Nigeria were champions in 1980, 1994 and 2013.
“It will be a good game, Cameroon are good, defending champions as well. I think the game will produce goals, we’ll try our best as always and put up a great fight.
“We have to give our best, and ensure we get the job done, although we are hopeful and we’ll be strong for the game. Yes, fans want us to win games in marvelous way, but getting the job done is the ultimate at this stage.
“Some of us have had a long season, and the situation is hard on the body. However, we are trying our best to improve with every game and dig deep to get results.”
