Akwa United Vs Wikki Tourists was postponed last week due to the Super Eagles 2019 AFCON Qualifier against South Africa set to hold Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International stadium in Uyo, home of Akwa United.
Naijafootballplus previews five matchday 23 fixtures set to take centre stage Wednesday.
ElKanemi Warriors (3rd) Vs Rangers (16th)
ElKanemi Warriors will put their proud unbeaten home record on the line when reigning NPFL champions Rangers’ come to town tomorrow. The Borno Army are yet to taste defeat at home in over 2-years of domestic league football.
They have won all eleven of their home matches this season and their impeccability will be surely tested when Rangers who are still hurting from their draw at the weekend against Nasarawa United.
Last time Rangers were away in the league they were thrashed four nil at Abia Warriors and they won’t want a repeat of that scoreline in Maiduguri.
When both sides met earlier this season, Rangers won one nil in Enugu.
Shooting Stars (19th) Vs Kano Pillars (12th)
After three straight defeats and having sunk deeper into relegation waters, Shooting Stars began their road to safety with a slender 1-0 home victory over Southwestern neighbours, Sunshine Stars. The Oluyole Warriors will play back-to-back home matches for the second time this season against Kano Pillars after last weekend’s’ derby.
Pillars on the other hand, have not had the best of season, they will be buoyed by the 2-1 home win on Matchday 22 at home to Lobi Stars and will have eyes on doing the double over Shooting Stars.
Niger Tornadoes (8th) Vs Rivers United (14th)
Attention turns to the NPFL for Nigeria’s only club in CAF competitions, Rivers United. Defeat in Uganda in the CAF Confederation Cup yet again exposed the club’s dreadful away run in all competitions. They will hope to turn their fortunes on the road starting with the trip to Lokoja. The Pride of Rivers need points to steer clear of the relegation even though they have played a game less.
Still reeling from last weekend’s 1-2 defeat in which ABS FC scored late in the game to deny them a point, Niger Tornadoes can resume their quest for a better league finish with a win against Rivers United. Tornadoes are yet to taste defeat at the Lokoja Confluence Stadium this season but have drawn two games out of eleven at home.
Lobi Stars (7th) Vs MFM FC (2nd)
Lobi Stars’ good run of results came to an end in Kano last weekend. The side from Makurdi will have eyes on avenging the 0-4 spanking they suffered in Lagos on Matchday 3, thereby closing the gap on the teams above them.
MFM ended a run of three-matches without a victory with a one nil win at home to FC Ifeanyi Ubah last time and will try not to fall a further behind Plateau United at the top of the table when they visit Makurdi on Wednesday.
The Yahweh boys have failed to score in their last four away matches in the NPFL and must plug a leaky defence which has been their undoing in away matches.
Abia Warriors (10th) Vs Remo Stars (20th)
Remo Stars halted a woeful run of 5 consecutive defeats with an impressive 2-0 home win against fellow newly promoted side Gombe United last time out and will hope to build on that victory in Umuahia against Abia Warriors. The sky blues must be wary of in-form Abia Warriors striker, Sunday Adetunji who has scored eleven league goals this season.
After crusing to a four nil win against Rangers on Matchday 21, Abia Warriors were brought down to earth by Katsina United a week later. Head coach of the Umuahia based team, Abdullahi Biffo will need to reorganise his troops ahead of this encounter.
This will be the first meeting in the league between both sides at the Umuahia Township stadium.
