High flying Fortuna Sittard managed by Nigerian legend Sunday Oliseh on Wednesday crashed out of the Dutch FA Cup as they threw away a 2-1 lead to lose 2-4 to AZ Alkmaar.
Fortuna Sittard recovered from going behind to a goal scored with just two minutes after kickoff by Wout Weghorst. Two goals scored by Djibril Dianessy and Finn Stokkers early in the second half overturned the deficit and put the Dutch second division side in control of the tie.
But AZ rallied late to score three goals in the closing stages through Weghorst (his second of the night), Jahan Bakhsh and Levi Garcia to dash any hopes of Oliseh’s side progressing into the quarterfinals.
Coach Sunday Oliseh is having a remarkable season at Sittard but today’s loss to a top team in the first division might just be a lesson of what to expect in the Eredivisie if they eventually gain promotion.
Oliseh would now turn his attention to the league where they come up against Utrecht II on Saturday with a win ensuring they stay top of the table going into the new year.
