Sunshine Stars midfielder Dayo Ojo has said he is delighted he was voted the ‘Man Of The Match’ in Nigeria’s win against Equatorial Guinea on Tuesday night at the Le Grand Stade, Agadir.
Nigeria came from behind to defeat Equatorial Guinea 3-1 and advanced to the quarter-final of the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.
Dayo Ojo who started his first game of the championship scored Super Eagles second goal in the second half when he hit a sweetly struck right footed shot in the 69th minute to give Nigeria the lead after Anthony Okpotu had equalised for the Super Eagles
“The atmosphere was tensed for us in the first half and we had a great discussion after the first half, we needed the points more than Equatorial Guinea who came to be the spoiler. We came back into the game in the second half with a more purposeful drive and we got the three points, we are super happy,” said an elated Ojo.
The Super Eagles midfielder added that the team was able to shake off the shock first half lead by the Equatorial Guinea.
Ojo added: “We were able to put behind us the first half performance, the goal was shocking. We lifted the team spirit and the momentum to win was high. I am happy I scored a brilliant goal that gave us the lead and the award was just the tonic of the night.
“I’m delighted I was voted the best player on the pitch. It was a collective victory and the individual award is for the team unity. The victory was more important and we are excited we won as a determined group.
“We know Nigerians will be happy, especially how we came back brilliantly in the second half. We want to appreciate them for the support in the group games and we are looking ahead for more success in the championship with their amazing support.”
