Akwa United reached the landmark of being the first team to score 10+ goals in the NPFL this season after a 1-1 draw on Wednesday in Nnewi against FC Ifeanyi Ubah.
The Abdul Maikaba led team have showed serious intent to the title chase for this season, and have racked up 13 points out of a possible 18 points from 6 games.
It was always going to be difficult going to FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s manor to grind out results, but Akwa United did that with FC Ifeanyi Ubah having to pull a goal back to force a draw.
Both teams started the game brightly and were explosive in the first 10 minutes, but Akwa United’s Cyril Olisema beat the offside trap and put his team in front in the 12th minute after receiving a through ball from Aniekeme Asuquo after the dominant display from the ‘promise keepers’.
FC Ifeanyi Ubah suffered a set back when Marksman, Godwin Obaje got injured in the 20th minute and was substituted for Chijoke Alaekwe. Akwa United’s intent in the game showed with their dominance, as Ubong Friday was unlucky to have doubled the lead in the 22nd minute.
Akwa United took the lead into halftime, but it was just 2 minutes into the 2nd half when Patrick Ikeoku restored parity and gave Ifeanyi Ubah the goal they needed. Akwa United who really dominated the game almost got ahead in the 73rd minute from Mbaoma’s strike, but was well parried by Bamba to keep scores level.
Ever reliable Olorunleke Ojo kept out what would have been the come back for Ifeanyi Ubah in the 75th minute, tipping a well placed Seka’s shot on goal.
In the end, it was a Cyril Olisema and Patrick Ikeoku’s goal that gave the fans excitement in terms of goals in what was a fabulous display of football after 90minutes.
Akwa United remained top after the draw with 13 points and play host to Wikki Tourist On Sunday for match day 7, while Ifeanyi Ubah with just 7 points travel to Makurdi to take on Lobi Stars.
