With less than 24 hour to the much awaited AFCON 2019 qualifier between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Pirates of Seychelles, the big question that requires answer in the Nigerian team, remains who should replace Victor Moses who announced his retirement from the team last month.

Naijafootballplus takes a look at the players involved in the fight for Moses shirt.

The retirement of the Chelsea winger shocked millions of Nigerians and since then they have been pondering on which player can fit in, in the shoes of the speed star.

Two players comes into mind anytime the big question is being asked and the players are Galatasaray forward Henry Onyekuru and Girondins Bordeaux winger Samuel Kalu.

Onyekuru who joined the Turkey side this summer on loan from the English premier league side Everton has been with the team in the past before injury kept him out of the team enroute Russia 2018 World Cup.

Kalu on his part has never being invited to the team, despite his great exploits in the colour of Belgium Jupiler league side KAA Gent last season. He left the Belgian side this summer for French Ligue one side Bordeaux.

The two players are similar to Moses in terms of wing play but Onyekuru seems to be better than Moses in terms of goalscoring ability if his performance with his past clubs Eupen, Anderlecht will be put into considerations.

He has continued his great scoring prowess with Galatasaray as he has netted twice for the club in just 4 matches, though he is yet to score for Nigeria in any game.

Kalu on his part also scored couple of goals for Gent last season, but can still be rated as equal with Moses in terms of scoring and this will be his first time in the national team.

Moses seems to be better than both players in terms of dribbling and skills exhibitions but in his absence somebody must wear his shoes.

The game against Seychelles might not be enough to assess both players, but it’s a question that will continue to linger on until a capable replacement is found between two players or any other player, while home based players can never be ruled out as well.

  1. Onyekuru and Kalu are two great players in their own different ways. But watching Onyekuru play is a beauty to behold. What I like more about Onyekuru is his fast footed pace.
