Hostilities took time to gain momentum at the Sanni Abacha Stadium, Kano, venue of the round 16- Group B games of the 2018 Aiteo Cup.
Sunshine Stars of Akure and Supreme Court FC of Abuja got actions underway in the first kickoff of the day, but a rather unfavourable weather took the better of the game’s tempo.
Both sides struggled to settle into the game with Sunshine Stars particularly failing to comolete passes and retain possession even as the NLO side managed to stay resolute at the back.
Following a tepid first half which ended goalless, both sides resumed the second half with renewed energy and it was the Abuja based club that first rattled the woodwork.
Franklin Sasere tried his luck with a low free kick which caused no problem for Supreme Court goalie and Kehinde Adedipe also fired over what should have been a calmly taken chance.
There was nothing to separate the two sides at the end of 90 minutes, leaving the starved Kano fans to anticipate a cracking showpiece between Rangers of Enugu and El Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri.
The second game surely started lively and Rangers took the lead in no time courtesy of a penalty kick by Ifeanyi George.
The Desert Warriors restored parity after the resumption of the second half, turning up the heat of a frenetic game but just when things were heading for another stalemate, second half substitute, Kelvin Itoya scored the second goal and match winner for Rangers four minutes from time.
With the results, Rangers are leading the pack with 3 points, Sunshine Stars and Supreme Court are tied on a point each while El Kanemi sit at the bottom with 0 point.
Actions resume at the centre on Wednesday with Sunshine Stars taking on El Kanemi Warriors in the first game while Rangers against Supreme Court FC will follow.
