Aiteo Cup preview: FC Ifeanyi Ubah seek to retain FA Cup trophy, Sunshine Stars look to peg high flying Akwa United

FC Ifeanyi Ubah’s quest to successfully defend their Federation Cup now Aiteo Cup trophy they won last season continues on Saturday as the Anambra Warriors take on another Nigeria Professional Football League side Niger Tornadoes.

A place in the final will be at stake when both teams clash in the first-leg of a two legged semi final tie at the Confluence stadium, Lokoja.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah qualified for the semi final of this year’s rebranded competition in grand style beating ABS FC of Ilorin 4-0 on aggregate despite missing 3 players who took part in the WAFU Cup.

Niger Tornadoes on their part edged newly crowned NPFL Champions Plateau United 4-2 on aggregate to progress into the semi final.

FC Ifeanyi Ubah will have a near full complement of their team as the likes of Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Stephen Eze are back  from representing Nigeria at the WAFU cup, but they are sweating on the fitness of  Adeleye Olamilekan who injured himself in the final of the WAFU Cup against Ghana.

In the second semi final, Sunshine Stars of Akure will host Akwa United in another mouthwatering all NPFL encounter.

Sunshine qualified for the Semi final after sending out Nigeria National League side Osun united 3-2 on aggregate, while Akwa United thrashed Katsina United feeders 8-2 on aggregate.

When both teams met in the league at the Dipo Dina stadium in Ijebu-Ode, Ajibola Otegbeye scored the only goal of the match for Sunshine Stars.

Both teams known for their distinctive styles of playing football – Sunshine Stars for their counterattacking approach under coach Duke Udi whereas Akwa United coached by Abdu Maikaba prefer the tiki-taka Barcelona-esque build up from the back mantra. One thing is certain though, both teams know how to find the back of the net.

The Akure Gunners have netted 11 goals in their last three matches played at the Dipo Dina stadium, while Akwa United has hit a mind-blowing 20 goals in their last 4 Aiteo Cup matches. Certainly won’t be a dull affair.
