Aiteo Cup Preview: Oriental derby pick of round of 16 ties

Nigeria Football Association cup christened Aiteo cup round of 16 ties takes centre stage today (Wednesday) across eight centres and it promises to provide keenly contested matches with FC Ifeanyi Ubah up against Heartland FC the pick of the ties.

Akwa United v Shooting Stars of Ibadan provides a repeat of match day 37 of the Nigeria Professional Football League which ended 1-0 in favour of Shooting Stars in Ibadan.

Akwa United mauled Yobe Desert Stars‎ 4-0 in Uyo in the round of 32 to qualify for this stage while Shooting Stars ousted Delta Warriors by a lone goal in Warri.

Another eye catching encounter is the game between FC Ifeanyi Ubah and Nigeria National League Southern conference leaders Heartland FC at the IfeanyiUbah stadium in Nnewi. FC Ifeanyi Ubah defeated junior side, Ifeanyi ubah feeders 2-0 to reach the round of 16 while Heartland FC edged out FRSC FC on 5-4 penalties after the match ended 1-1 draw in regulation time.

FC Ifeanyi‎ Ubah are defending champions of the Aiteo Cup.

Ngwa FC, a team tagged giant killers will play host to Sunshine Stars‎ FC in Abakaliki stadium in Ebonyi state. Ngwa FC are a non league side, they defeated Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi 4-3 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time while Sunshine Stars sent last season’s runner up, Nasarawa United parking with a 4-2 win in Ijebu-Ode.

Newly crowned Nigeria Professional Football League champions Plateau will hope to keep their dreams of winning a double alive when they file out in Uyo against Akwa Starlets.

Other fixtures sees relegated ABS travel to Calabar to play Unicem Rovers. Osun United are up against El-Kanemi Babes while FC Abuja host Niger Tornadoes.
