Recuperating Rivers United goalkeeper Abiodun Akande has called on his teammates to strive hard to retain its NPFL status for him starting with a win against Remo Stars.
Eighteenth-placed Rivers United travel to bottom placed Remo Stars FC on Sunday in match day 34 of the Nigeria Professional Football League in Abeokuta.
Abiodun, who has been out of action for three weeks due to a broken leg injury sustained in the league game against Wikki Tourists of Bauchi in Port Hacourt, told naijafootballplus.com he hopes they win in Sagamu for him.
“I’ve been out of action for just three weeks and I don’t want to be in a rush. It’s obvious I’m not going to play again this season but I will be glad if my teammates can strive hard enough to retain our NPFL status for me. That alone would be a thing of joy.
Akande is currently undergoing rehabilitation in Port Hacourt where he underwent a successful surgery, he went further to reveal he is recuperating well.
“I’m now doing some activities based on doctor’s directives. I’m recuperating and responding to treatment very well”, he said to naijafootballplus.com
The goalkeeper who joined the Pride of Rivers last season says fighting relegation this season wasn’t part of the plan for Rivers United after they finished second last season.
“We actually didn’t plan it this way. Our target at the beginning of the season was to clinch the title that we narrowly missed last season to Rangers International but look at us this season, we are battling the relegation. This is not so good for our pedigree and I hope the players can sustain it by at least pick the maximum points in Abeokuta on Sunday against Remo stars.
“We have a very good team but we don’t know what went wrong. Battle to survive the drop must begin this weekend against Remo Stars. I’m pleading to my teammates to please give it a top priority and play the game as if their lives depended on it. Remo Stars will also want to prove a point as they only have pride to play for in this encounter. So it’s going to be a tough game but we can get a win over there.”
