Super Eagles and Chippa United choice goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi remains a big doubt for their first ever Nedbank cup quarter final showdown against Jomo Cosmos coming up on Saturday.

Akpeyi who was in goal when Nigeria took on the Desert Foxes of Algeria in the Russia 2018 qualifier in Uyo, hobbled through the Chippa United loss to Kaizer Chiefs last weekend.

Since Monday Akpeyi has been working separately from the squad under the supervision of the team physio.

“Dan is training under the watchful eye of the physio and will probably need fitness tests before he can be passed to play at the weekend‚” club spokesperson Luthado Zibeko said.

If the injury is prolonged it will be a big blow to Nigeria ahead of the AFCON 2019 qualifier between Nigeria Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana of South Africa after first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was ruled out for a long period due to recurring hamstring injury.

Chippa United have never won the Nedbank Cup but with home advantage on Saturday, they will fancy their chances of progressing to the next round.
