We begin our football action summary of Nigerian players performances in Europe this weekend with matches played on Friday 16th February 2018.
English-born On loan Arsenal winger of Nigerian decent Chuba Akpom opened his goal scoring account for Belgian club St.Truiden while playing against Anderlecht in what turned out to be the match winner and only goal of a highly contested Belguim First Division encounter.
Akpom scored in the 42nd minute and had earlier seen his 11th minute effort chalked of first half added time. He was subbed off in the 80th minute.
ENGLAND – FA CUP
The English Premier League takes a break with FA Cup matches taking center stage and it was action galore for Super Eagles duo of Kelechi Iheanacho and midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, who both combined to help Leicester City see off resilient Sheffield United by 0-1 at the king power Stadium to advance to the next round.
Iheanacho and Ndidi both started and played to the end.
Meanwhile Chelsea thrashed Hull City by 4-0, manager Conte rested Victor Moses with an eye on the UEFA Champions League games next midweek.
Hull City were unable to call on the duo of Super Eagles full back Ola Aina and Fikayo Tomori who are on loan from Chelsea and ineligible to play against their parent club.
GERMANY – Bundesliga
Super Eagles center back Leon Balogun was in good form at the heart of Mainz 05 defense, helping them keep a clean sheet over Hertha Berlin in a 2-0 away win. Victory saw Mainz end a four-match winless run in all competitions
Balogun was yellow carded in the 63rd minute and saw out the whole game time.
His team-mate and striker Anthony Ujah was introduced late in the game.
