Victor Mbaoma scored a late goal to ensure Akwa United won a hard-fought battle against Sunshine Stars of Akure in a match day 18 encounter at the Godswill Akpabio stadium, Uyo.
The game kicked off in a lively manner and the first chance fell to the hosts but Adeshina Gata blasted wide inside the area from a lay up.
Few minutes later, matchday 16 VAT Wonder Goal winner, Sikiru Alimi dazzled for the Akure club to win a free kick but Dayo Ojo’s take was off the mark.
Exciting midfielder, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi however broke the deadlock for the Promise Keepers with a beautiful free kick in the 39th minute but the joy of scoring will be short lived for him as he was immediately taken off with an injury.
The first half did however end with the home team in front.
Barely two minutes into the second half, Franklin Sasere benefited from a goalkeeping error and poked home to restore parity after Akwa goalkeeper Ismaila Shagari spilled Seun Olulayo’s cross. Sunshine Stars will also have a player substituted moments following a goal, as right full back, Obasi was replaced by Anthony Omaka after also sustaining an injury.
Galvanized by conceding the equalizer, Abdu Maikaba’s men turned up the pressure and it became Sunshine Stars goalkeeper; Moses Ocheje versus Akwa United. The winning goal did come eventually courtesy of Victor Mbaoma who turned in Gabriel Wassa’s cross.
Following the win Akwa United climb up to fourth on the table with 26 points from 15 games while Sunshine Stars are 16th on the log with 20 points after 18 games.
Akwa will be away to Enyimba on match day 19 and Sunshine will be home to league leaders Lobi Stars.
