All three Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) teams on the continent recorded remarkable results in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively including two away victories in Banjul and Yaounde while MFM FC won in Lagos.
Akwa United achieved the unthinkable in Banjul against Hawks FC on Wednesday evening as they overturned a 1-2 deficit to progress to the next round. Hawks shocked the Promise Keepers in Uyo in the first leg with a 2-1 win. Akwa United turned the result around with a 2-0 win in Banjul to progress 3-2 on aggregate to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup. Cyril Olisema was the hero with a goal in each half of the encounter to help the Aiteo Cup champions advance to the next round of the tournament.
Rafeal Ayangwa’s 56th minute goal ensured NPFL champions Plateau United defeated Ending Sport 1-0 in Yaounde, the Kennedy Boboye led side proceed to the final qualifying round of the CAF Champions League after an emphatic 4-0 aggregate score-line.
In Lagos, MFM FC piped AS Real Bamako 1-0 at the Soccer Temple, Agege on Wednesday. Chijioke Akuneto came on from the bench and scored the winner in the highly contested encounter. The Olukoya Boys progressed to the final round of the CAF Champions League 2-1 on aggregate.
Plateau United will face Etoile Du Sahel of Tunisia in the next round, while MFM FC will battle MC Algeirs in the CAF Champions League final round of the qualifiers.
Enyimba International will begin their CAF Confederation Cup quest against Benin Republic side Energie FC while Akwa United have been paired against Al-Ittihad of Libya.
This is the first time since 2012 that all four NPFL teams would avoid been knocked out from the first round of the qualifiers. The next round of matches will come up next month.
