Euro Watch: Aminu with assist, Etebo and Ebuehi injury concerns for Super Eagles

We bring to your reading pleasure a summary of Nigerian players in action across various European centers.

Germany –  Bundesliga

Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun and striker Anthony Ujah were both selected from the start for Mainz 05 whose disastrous first half performance condemned them to a 0-3 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt who scored all their goals in a first half blitz.

Torrid day it was for Balogun in defense but he did improve in the second half to see off the entire 90 minutes, but Ujah who was denied by the Frankfurt goalkeeper in the first half was replaced by Yoshinori Muto in the 55th minute.

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen came on for Wolfsburg in the 80th minute but a 76th minute missed penalty by Wolfsburg was punished late on by Schalke 04 through a fortuitous late Robin Knoche own goal in the 86th minute.

German defender of Nigerian descent, Felix Udoaki made his return to the Wolfsburg substitute bench after a lengthy injury lay off.

Russia – Premier League


Midfielder Kehinde Fatai came on in the 64th minute to replace Dmitri Sysuev for FC Ufa, needing only 5 minutes to pick up a yellow card but was key in helping his side overcome FC Krasnodar 1-0.

Spain – Primera Division

It’s unclear why Super Eagles invitee Oghenekaro Etebo missed his first match for Las Palmas in their relegation battle game against Deportivo La Coruna that eventually ended 1-1.

Imoh Ezekiel was an unused substitute for Las Pamas while former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike is yet to feature for Las Pamas since joining up with them due to lingering injury.

England – Championship
It was a humbling experience for on loan Chelsea full back Ola Aina whose Hull City were mulled 0-3 by Birmingham City.

Former Super Eagles left footed winger Sone Aluko lasted 52 minutes for Reading in their thrilling 2-3 loss to Norwich City.

Turkey – Super Lig

The Nigerian battle in the Turkish Super League involving defenders Abdullahi Shehu, Troost Ekong and midfielder Mikel Agu for Buraspor and Super Eagles assistant captain Ogenyi Onazi for Sivasspor ended with the Buraspor contingent inflicting a 1-0 defeat to their national team teammate ( Onazi ).

On Friday, Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo who is on loan from Chelsea and Emem Eduok both started for Kasimpasa who were beaten 2-3 at home to Antalyaspor after they were reduced to 10 men.

Eduok was replaced by Bengali-Fode Koita in the 54th minute.

Still on Friday, Aminu Umar provided a 41st minute assist for Mehmet Batdal in Osmanlispor FK 4-0 thrashing of Karabukspor away from home.

Umar was then recalled to the bench in the 74th minute for Payam Sadeghian who took his place.

Netherlands – Eredivisie

Super Eagles coach will have some more reshuffling to do with ADO Den Haag’s Nigerian right back Tyrone Ebuehi missing their 2-1 win over Excelsior with an injury that now appears to be more severe than what the German tactician thought, ahead of Nigeria’s friendly matches against Poland and Serbia next week.

Ex Super Eagles striker Bartholomew Ogbeche was an unused substitute in Willem II 2-2 draw away to FC Twente.

Switzerland – Super League

In a game of penalties, former MFM striker Stephen Odey came on in the 74th minute for FC Zuerich in their 1-2 loss at home to Young Boys who missed a penalty and then scored another to edge the top derby in Switzerland.

Sweden – FA Cup

Oestersunds FK were knocked out of the Swedish FA Cup semi final, losing to a late goal against Malmoe FF, with Nigerian forward and quarter final goal hero Alhaji Gero sitting out the encounter for Ostersunds.
