Rivers United aims to use the Federation Cup to redeem themselves says team captain Festus Austine.

Rivers United finished second in the league last season a feat which prompted followers and fans alike to think winning the league was possible this season.

It has however been a terrible season for the Port Harcourt side and with four games to the end of the season their top flight status is all but certain.

Following a win away at Remo on NPFL match day 34, Austine says it’s a reborn United side and the team will play with more gusto henceforth.

“It feels good to have gotten that win on the road because we’ve been working hard for it” he tells Naijafootball plus.

“From that win at Remo you can all expect a new Rivers United.”

Fans had recently turned on the team and also called for the sack of Technical Adviser Stanley Eguma.

Austine understands the passion shown by the fans who naturally expect more following huge investment in the team by it’s sponsors and hopes to make amends with the Federation Cup.

“As team captain I have been worried same as my colleagues” he reveals.

“We’ve held series of meetings to turn the situation around.

“We know we have to do something to put a smile on their (fans) faces and also justify the investment by our sponsors who have given us everything.

“Hopefully with the Federation Cup we’ll get it right.”

The Edo born Captain also reveals to Naijafootball plus that he had promised himself to play three straight seasons on the continent with United.

Austine is out injured at the moment but he believes his team mates will do Rivers State proud as they commence the Federation Cup with a round of 64 match against J.Atete FC.

“No team is easy most especially when they come from the Pro League.

“But I know my boys will get it right against them” (J.Atete)

Rivers United plays host to Warri side J.Atete on Wednesday by 16:00hrs at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Rivers State.
