Former Nigerian U-20 and Olympic football U-23 one time star, Taiwo Awoniyi wracked up his goals tally for the ongoing 2017/18 Belgian League season to six after netting a brace in a frantic seven goals thriller between his club Royal Excel Mouscron and their host Standard Liege who have Super Eagles defender Uche Agbo in their ranks.
Awoniyi lead the lines for Mouscron away to Standard Liege who on their part dropped Uche Agbo on the bench for this clash at their home turf – Stade Maurice Dufrasne, and dully went ahead with just 8 minutes into kickoff through Christian Luyindama.
Awoniyi soon responded latching on a well laid assist from Nathan De Medina in the 19th minute to even scores.
Two minutes into the second half Standard Liege restored their lead through Sebastien Pocognoli’s effort in the 47th minute, but Awoniyi popped up again as provider to assist Dorin Rotariu equalize in the 65th minute.
The advantage seemed to have swung the way of Awoniyi and his Royal Mouscron team-mates when Christian Luyindama scorer of the match opening goal was sent off in the 73rd minute, with Awoniyi putting his side ahead for the first time in the match three minutes later with what looked like the match winner.
With three minutes left to play, Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez dragged the host back into the game to bring scores at 3-3.
But more drama followed when the Leige fans were sent into wild celebrations as Duje Cop scored in the 89th minute, two minutes after they just equalized.
Omar Govea then received his matching orders in the 90th minute for Mouscron to even the numbers of players on both sides to 10 men each.
In truth Standard Liege were full value for their win with their commanding dominance over Awoniyi’s Mouscron despite going a man down earlier on.
Awoniyi who is still 20-years was loaned out to Royal Mouscron by EPL top side Liverpool to gather more experience having signed him in 2015.
He has now scored 6 goals in 24 appearances in all of Royal Mouscron who are placed 12th from 16 teams on the league table, with 29 points from 26 matches.
Awoniyi will be hoping to continue his goal scoring form next Sunday against Waasland-Beveren, while Uche Agbo will be hoping to return to the Standard Liege starting lineup when they tackle Sporting Charleroi.
