Former Flying Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi was on the score sheet for Royal Mouscron in their 3-5 loss away to Anderlecht in Sunday’s Belgian First Division game at the Constant Vanden Stock stadium, home of Anderlecht.
Awoniyi who is on loan from English Premier League top side Liverpool, started the come back for Mouscron who went down 4-0 following goals from Ryota Morioka in the 26′ minute, before Lukasz Teodorczyk scored a hat-trick in the space of 16 minutes after the restart to take the game well beyond Mouscron’s reach, or so it seemed until Awoniyi charged them back into the game.
The 20-year-old Nigerian striker scored in the 70th minute when he latched on to a pass from Dorin Rotariu. Benjamin van Durmen further brought Mouscron into the game with his 72nd minute strike.
Teddy Mezague scored Mouscron’s third with four minutes left on the clock and brought the visitors to within a goal of a remarkable come back while sending the Anderlecht fans into high tension, until Ryota Morioka scored in the 90th minute to seal the three points for Anderlecht.
Awoniyi who lasted the entire duration of the match has now scored 8 goals in all competitions for Royal Mouscron in 26 appearances.
Royal Mouscron are 6 points off the relegation spot and will next play against Lokeren next Saturday.
Anderlecht were without Super Eagles striker Henry Onyekuru who is still nursing a long term Knee injury.
