Awoniyi’s strike a mere consolation in loss to Liege


There was action in Leagues across Europe on Friday, here we take a look at matches Nigerian players were involved in and how they performed.


Friday night battle of Nigerians in the Belgian league pitted on loan Liverpool forward Taiwo Awoniyi who scored in the 49th minute for Royal Excel Mouscron in their 1-3 loss to Super Eagles defender Uche Agbo’s Standard Liege.

Awoniyi’s goal for Mouscron was his third in 9 matches for the Belgian Pro League club. He has now scored four goals in 10 appearances for the Belgian side since his loan move from Liverpool in the summer.

Both Nigerians lasted played the full 90 minutes for their various clubs.


Nigerian international Gbolahan Salami came off the bench in the 68th minute and scored with his first touch of the ball a minute later, in what turned out to be the winning goal for FC KuPS in a 2-1 triumph over  JJK Fc.

His Nigerian compatriot Reuben Gabriel was on for 90 minutes and was yellow carded in the 57th minute.


Out of favour Super Eagles central defender Kenneth Omeruo who is on loan from Chelsea to Kasimpasa, featured for 10-men Kasimpasa in a1-2 loss to Antalyaspor away from home.

Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o scored the match winning goal.


Leon Balogun returned to the starting lineup of Mainz 05 in Friday night’s Bundesliga 0-2 loss away at Schalke 04 .

The Super Eagles defender was subbed off in the 79th minute of the encounter with his team trailing.
