Welcome to the mid week edition of the European football action summary of Nigerian players.
GERMANY DFB POKAL ( FA CUP )
It was pleasing to find Nigerian football fans favourite, central defender Leon Balogun return to action for Mainz 05 in Germany in the DFB Pokal Cup competition alongside Nigerian striker Anthony Ujah against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.
It however ended in a 0-3 defeat for the Nigerian duo, with Balogun receiving a yellow card in the 71st minute after coming on to replace Alexander Hack in the 67th minute.
Ujah was subbed off in the 56th minute.
It was acsimilar fate for former Golden Eaglet striker Victor Osimhen who came on as an 80th minute substitute in Schalke 04 1-0 triumph over his Wolfsburg side.
There was no heroics for Nigerian striker Fred Friday in the colours of Sparta Rotterdam who were beaten 1-0 by hosts FC Utrecht.
Rotterdam are rooted to the bottom of the table with Friday faced with lower division football next season if things don’t turn around soon.
ENGLAND : FA CUP REPLAY
On Tuesday, English born striker of Nigerian heritage Tammy Abraham scored two and assisted one in Swansea City’s 8-1 demolition of Notts County.
Similarly, English born forward of Nigerian decent Fred Onyedinma was on for 90’minutes as his Millwall fc side lost 0-1 away to Rochdale Fc.
BELGUIM -FA CUP
There was no joy for striker Abduljaleel Ajagun whose Kortrijk Fc team were evicted by the only goal scored in the game by Genk FC Barcelona Spain.
Ajagun was withdrawn in the 73rd minute.
