After demolishing eastern-region rivals Rangers International 4-0 at the Umuahia Township stadium last Sunday in a Nigeria Professional Football League match, Head Coach of Abia Warriors Abdullahi Biffo was surprisingly disappointed with the fight put up by the reigning league champions.
Goals from Anthony Okemmiri, substitute Samson Obi and a brace by Sunday Adetunji completed the rout over the reigning NPFL champions, a result which meant Abia Warriors completed a league double over their Oriental City neighbours.
Biffo who still had memories of last season’s 2-2 draw against title-chasing Rangers said during his post-match interview that Rangers made the game look easy for his team.
“I don’t know what really happened to them, they did not live up to expectation. They made the game easy for my boys,” said Biffo.
“This is not the Enugu Rangers we expect to play here, I think the coach (of Rangers) will know what went wrong and know how to correct it,” he concluded.
It’s been a tumultuous year for Rangers who had parted company with coach Imama Amapakabo who led them to their first trophy after 32-years last season. But despite the 4-0 defeat, Rangers are still above the relegation zone in 15th position level on 26 points with Gombe United and Katsina United only separated by virtue of a superior goals scored record.
Meanwhile Abdullahi Biffo’s Abia Warriors moved to 8th position with 31 points, just three points behind FC Ifeanyi Ubah who occupy the third and final continental qualification position in third place.
Abia Warriors will travel up north to face Katsina United on Matchday 22 (04-06-2017) of the NPFL while Rangers are at home to Nasarawa United on the same day.
