A goal in the first minute from the returning striker, Abdulrahman Bashir and a brace from fellow striker Chinonso Okonkwo helped Enyimba FC beat Energie FC 3-2 in Calabar on Sunday in a CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round fixture.
Enyimba FC had beaten the Beninoise side 2-0 in the first leg in Cotonou 10 days ago and were confident of qualification, but a lack of concentration made their visitors take the game to them.
Enyimba raced to a lead when striker, Bashir, pounced on a goalkeeping error to score Enyimba’s first on the evening and their third on aggregate to take the game farther away from their opponents.
Energie FC came out after the goal with sudden belief that they could salvage the already gloomy situation, putting in hard tackles which further reduced the tempo of their hosts.
Enyimba still managed to make attempts on goal with Dimgba and Ibenegbu missing the target before the break.
Energie FC, brewing with energy, brought the game back to life in the second half when Elegbede fired a long range volley past Nigerian international, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, to level the scores.
Enyimba got yet another gift five minutes later when a goal mouth scramble set up Okonkwo in front of goal and the striker made no mistakes and restored Enyimba’s lead again.
The game turned dramatic with few minutes of regular time left, Odjouhassi fired a free kick into the Enyimba goal for yet another equaliser but Enyimba who were determined not to lose had a late penalty foloowing a foul on Okonkwo to restore their lead deep in added time.
The win dumps Energie FC out of the continent with a 5-2 aggregate scoreline and Enyimba will wait for new opponents, the last hurdle to the group stages of the competition.
