Two early goals in a space of five minutes helped two-time African Champions League winners and Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) side, Enyimba International defeat hard fighting Energie FC of Benin 2-0 in Cotonou in the first leg of the preliminary round of CAF Confederation Cup.
The Nigerians who are returning to the continent two years after their shambolic group stage display in the CAF Champions League two seasons ago, were drawn bye in the preliminary round and then lined up to face Energie FC who were runners up in the Benin Football League.
Enyimba fielding a very strong attacking lineup raced off the blocks to attack their opponents. Their attacks yielded fruits almost immediately as Energie FC’s defender, Lanignan’s header sent his goalkeeper the wrong way to put the visitors ahead in the fourth minute with an onrushing Dimgba ensuring it never missed the target.
Only five minutes later, Dimgba found Oladapo in the far post with a clever dink and the Nigerian international fired into the bottom corner to double Enyimba’s lead.
The shellshocked Energie FC rallied to save themselves from a rout but Enyimba kept pushing for a third.
Dimgba tested Energie’s Damilola and Okonkwo helped him keep their hosts’ backline very busy but never found another breakthrough.
The hosts had their own share of an attempt in the first half but Kassa fired well wide of Dauda’s goal.
Enyimba came out for the second half with more firepower but couldn’t add to their tally. Dimgba missed from an Ibenegbu delivery and that seemed to spur the hosts for a fight. Santou and Odjouhassi hit the crossbar and Dauda’s finger tip save denied them from m long range in a quick fire double of missed chances. Dauda had to deny the later again who seemed to let one fly at every chance.
Chukwude who has missed a couple of chances earlier, lost one last chance to redeem himself and add a third to the scoreline but the impressive Damilola stopped his penalty and made sure the scoreline remained the same.
Enyimba who boast of one of the best away records in the NPFL, will take the healthy result into the return leg next weekend.
