Three quick goals in less than 10 first half minutes helped Etoile du Sahel beat Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions Plateau United 4-2 in the first leg of the last preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
The Nigerian Champions were playing in the tournament for the first time and got the difficult fixture as a reward for walloping Eding Sport FC of Cameroon 4-0 on aggregate.
A 2nd minute goal and a brace from Marai and Chermiti scored in the space of 5 minutes, stunned the Nigerians and put the Tunisians on course for a rout but their visitors managed to hold on to the margin until the break.
Etoile resumed after the restart in a fashion similar to the first and stretched the margin to 4-0 with a strike from Sfaxi nine minutes into the second half.
Plateau United pulled one back from the spot courtesy of a 70th-minute Ayagwa panenka penalty and Omoloye added a second with nine minutes of regular time left on the clock.
Plateau United became the first Nigerian club to score more than one goal against Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia since the defunct Julius Berger FC did that in 2001.
The second leg will be played in Jos next weekend. The winner of the tie on after two legs progresses to the group stage of the CAF Champions League while the vanquished will drop to the final qualification round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
