English football is nothing if not dramatic, and that drama is getting incorporated into competition draws, as the Carabao Cup has been bearing testament to.
In August, the pairings for the Third Round of the competition took place in China at 4:15 am (!), and today’s draw for the last eight has taken another dramatic move. It might have not happened in the South-East Asia at wee hours- Twitter was the location this time- , but it was delayed for some two hours, after which the Carabao Cup’s official handle sent out a pre-recorded video of the draw.
The draw by the way, saw holders Manchester United handed an away trip to Championship side Bristol City, who saw off Crystal Palace on Tuesday. United’s neighbours and Premier League leaders Manchester City are also paired to play away from home, Pep Guardiola’s team- who knocked out Wolves via a penalty shootout in the last round- will visit 2016 league champions Leicester City.
Current league champions Chelsea are handed a home tie against Bournemouth, while Arsenal face West Ham in an all-London affair.
The quarter-final ties will be played in the week of December 18, after which the semi-final draw will be held; and given the way the previous draws have been panning out, winter might just be coming.
