Carabao Cup: Iwobi’s Arsenal thumped by Manchester City

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi started from the bench for Arsenal in their Carabao Cup final 0-3 loss to rampant Manchester City at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Sergio Aguero handed the citizens the lead in the 18th minute when he lobbed the onrushing Ospina in goal for Arsenal after controlling a long pass from his goalkeeper Bravo.

Man City captain Vincent Kompany gave Coach Guardiola’s charges a breather with the second goal in the 58th from a corner kick. David Silva sealed the win in the five minutes after the hour mark when he fired low after a swift turn.

Iwobi who picked up a slight knock from Arsenal’s UEFA Europa League loss to Ostersunds last Thursday and was thrown into action in the 73rd minute to replace Aaron Ramsey.

Iwobi injected some pace in the Arsenal attack and almost reduced the deficit but for a very attentive goalkeeper Bravo who was quick of his line to snatch the ball off the Nigerian’s feet.

With the victory, Pep Guardiola has now won his first trophy for Manchester City and is well on his way to adding the Premier League title with the Etihad outfit clear up top from the chasing park on the league standings.

Both Manchester City and Arsenal will clash again in mid-week in a Premier league rescheduled fixture at the Emirates.
