Fidelis Ilechukwu has admitted that MFM FC lost to a “better” side following his team’s loss to Djoliba AC in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup playoff match played in Lagos on Sunday.

MFM lost 0-1 to the West African club at the Agege Township Stadium much to the disappointment of their fans who had hoped of getting at least a point from the game.

Reflecting on the defeat and the way forward for the Lagos based Nigeria Professional Football League club, Coach Ilechukwu admitted that the Malians performance was remarkable but with hard work and determination, MFM can still go through to the next phase.

“The Malians are better but it’s not yet over however it will be very difficult for MFM, there is nothing we can do now; sad news, sad result but at the same time football,” said a downcast Ilechukwu at the post match press conference.

“Every coach is always positive, but in football we must say the truth. The truth is that in this condition the Malians have an advantage but in football anything can happen.”

Fidelis Ilechukwu who watched his side lose several scoring chances also added that he did not “underrate” his opponents but explained that MFM will need to sign more players if they are to compete favourably on the continent.

“We didn’t underrate any team, what we showcased today is what we have, you cannot use what you don’t have.

“Before the beginning of the CAF Champions League, I said a lot of things about signing players.

“This is our structure, this is what we have, and you can’t use what you don’t have,” he added.

The Olukoya Boys now have a difficult task of winning Djoliba AC convincingly next week  if they must get to the group stage of the continental showpiece.
