Dogo: We deserved to beat Sunshine Stars

Nasarawa United manager, Kabiru Dogo is quite excited his side won the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matchday 29 clash at Sunshine Stars.

The Solid Miners defeated the Owena Waves 1-0 in Sunday’s encounter at the Otunba Dipo Dina International Stadium in Ijebu-ode.

Bashir Abdulrahman was the hero for the visitors. He scored the only goal which proved to be the winner in the 39th minute of the game.

Sunshine Stars dominated the encounter but lacked the curtain edge to find the back of the net. Abe Sunday and Dayo Ojo struck the woodwork respectively as the visitors got lucky twice.

Thompson Ezekiel almost saved the day for the hosts in additional time but Nasarawa United goalkeeper Suraj Ayeleso pulled off a big save from closed range.

“It’s a big win for us, congratulations to my players and backroom staff. We appreciate the management and the club sponsor (Nasarawa State Government) for the amazing support this season.

“We have been searching for away win all season and we are happy it finally came this time. We deserve to win the game, my boys put everything into the game. We got our formation right and my players were perfect in all position,” said Dogo to after the victory.

Nasarawa United now occupy 9th position in the NPFL table with 41 points from 29 matches. Despite the Solid Miners 10 points adrift of league leaders Plateau United, Dogo believes his team can still challenge for the league title.

“We are still on course and we are not far away from our set target for the season. No team has won the title yet and the league title race is still much open for any team to win.

“We will continue to fight both home and away, gather positive results and weigh our options in the title race. We are also still in contention to finish the season with a continental ticket.

“It’s very important we don’t slip off after this win, we have to learn from Sunshine Stars situation. They won away last weekend and lost to us, we have to be careful. From my experience in the league, any team that won away their next home game are always difficult we have to prepare and stay focus,” he said.

Nasarawa United goalkeeper, Suraj Ayeleso kept his 12th clean sheet of the season. He has kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper in the NPFL this season, but missed out from the CHAN Super Eagles squad.

Dogo added: “Suraj has been wonderful this season, he’s one of our top performers and I must also give kudos to the entire players and our defenders who always worked hard to protect our goalkeeper.

“I think Suraj’s time will come, he will surely get the National team call up. I have told him to remain focused and continue to work hard for the team.”
