Sunshine Stars head coach, Duke Udi is delighted with his team’s result against Rivers United in week 30 of the Nigeria Professional Football League in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
After they suffered home defeat to Nasarawa United last weekend, the Akure gunners won 0-1 in Port Harcourt against Rivers United.
Thompson Ezekiel’s 68th minute header for Sunshine Stars ensured they pipped Stanley Eguma’s wards 0-1 at the Yakubu Gowon stadium.
“We are satisfied with the victory and we are happy it came at the right time”, Udi told naijafootballplus.com
“We played fantastically well against Rivers United and I think it’s a deserved victory for us. Rivers United are a very good side but my boys did so well to have gotten the win.
“The loss against Nasarawa United was quiet painful. It’s a turning point to get a win against Rivers United because we created so many numerous chances but we didn’t utilise them. Nasarawa United created just one and they made use of it and they won. The boys were not happy and we came here with the mindsets of winning and we are glad we did just that.
Udi also praised his players and described their performance against Rivers United as that of a ‘wounded Lion’
“It’s a collective hard work, commitment, dedication and determination from the boys that gave us the victory and we played like a wounded lion. Winning back to back away games in the league hasn’t been easy.
“With respect to Rivers United, we are the team that has beaten them at home in the league in the last two years. They gave a very good account of themselves but because we played fantastically well, We were very lucky to have beat them infront of their fans. So we are very proud of that achievement and we must continue to work hard to avoid any slip up at home.
“There’s happiness at achieving a very important result especially against big opposition like Rivers United who’s the pedigree of continental football. Our response and reaction was so fantastic and incredible. Everyone put in a great performance to achieve this positive result.
The Sunshine Stars gaffer has written off any relegation fears faced by his team. But instead says he’s focused on finishing in a comfortable league position come this season’s end.
“We aren’t even thinking of relegation any longer but how to finish well on the log. We are now thinking on how to garner more points. There are about 24 possible points to play for, and we want to garner as more points as possible to finish comfortable on the log.
“Now we would be taking every game as they come. We would respect every opponent starting from our next game against El-Kanemi Warriors. They are a top team and they have a very good handler in Laddan Bosso, the man I’m looking upto as a young coach but we are going to give them a run for their money. It’s going to be another fantastic game for me and my boys and we are looking up to get our three points against them.
Sunshine stars are 14th on the log with 39 points and will host El-Kanemi Warriors on Sunday in the NPFL at the Otunba Dipo Dinna stadium, Ijebu-Ode
