Eagles land in Johannesburg, Rohr laments team crisis

Nigeria’s delegation to Saturday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match between the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana of South Africa have landed safely in the city of Johannesburg on Friday morning, Naijafootballplus.com reports.

The Max Air aircraft that took off from Asaba, Delta had a stop-over in Angola after been airborne for three hours, the refueling and mechanical check up took two hours in Angola before the delegation proceed to Johannesburg.

The contingent landed in Johannesburg at 3.30am South Africa (2.30am Nigeria time) with the players full of life and cheerful. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick who led the advance party to South Africa and officials of the Nigeria High Commission in South Africa were on ground to welcome the team at the airport.

Super Eagles will be missing four players to injury and suspension, Shehu Abdullahi, Francis Uzoho, Odion Ighalo are all injured while Wilfred Ndidi is suspended for the encounter.

Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr laments the injury to his key players and suspension to the Leicester City midfielder.

“We are having a difficult situation with our injured players and also suspension,” said Rohr to Naijafootballplus.com on arrival in Johannesburg.

“We are missing Shehu our right back, Ndidi who was suspended, our goalkeeper Uzoho is injured and our goalscorer Ighalo. Although, we have work in training and we have some new players in the team to compliment those missing.

“We are ready for the game despite the challenges, we are here for revenge. We lost our first AFCON qualifying game to them, it’s over one year we lost to them in Uyo. We have a different and better team now with World Cup experience.

“I believe my young team will produce a good game despite missing four important players, especially Uzoho and Ighalo. Training sessions were good in Asaba and we have prepared for the game. I believe the boys will give a good fight and earn respectable result in the game.”

Super Eagles players and officials were lodge at The Capital on the park hotel apartment. The team will have their official training at the FNB Stadium at 3pm South Africa (2pm Nigeria time), same time for kickoff of the game tomorrow (Saturday).
