Sunshine Stars inflicted a first defeat in three matches on Nigeria Professional Football League Champions Rangers International as they ran out 2-0 winners in a rescheduled NPFL matchday 13 encounter.
In his first game as coach of Sunshine Stars, ex Super Eagles handler Austin Eguavoen saw his side take the lead in the 58th minute from the penalty spot after Rangers’ Osas Okoro was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the penalty box. Ajibola Otegbeye scored the resultant penalty.
With less than 15 minutes remaining before the full time whistle, Alaba Adeniyi increased the hosts lead to hand Eguavoen his first win in charge of the Akure gunners.
The victory sees Sunshine Stars climb to 14th place on the log with 24pts from 19 matches. Rangers remain in 19th position with 19pts but have played two games less.
Meanwhile, a seventeenth minute goal by Adamu Hassan saw Nasarawa United edge Rivers United 1-0 at the Lafia City stadium.
The victory sees the hosts climb to the top-half of the table in 9th place while the pride of Rivers have now tasted back-to-back defeats on the road. Rivers United are in 17th position with 21pts though they have one game in hand.
