Kano Pillars are through to the semifinals of this year’s Aiteo Cup following a 4-2 win over Enyimba in the last quarterfinal tie played on Sunday.
Captain Rabiu Alli, defenders Chris Madaci and Ifeanyi Nweke as well as Nwagua Nyima were all on target as the Groundnut Pyramid City Boys made a light work of the Aba giants at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe.
En route to the game, Enyimba topped the Gombe centre with seven points to set up the famous ZoBia meeting with Kano Pillars who finished behind Kwara United at the Lagos centre – and the crunchy tie follows Enyimba’s disappointing home loss to Raja Casablanca in the first leg of the CAF Confederations Cup Semifinal.
Enyimba drew first blood as early as the 16th minute through Stephen Chukwude before Rabiu Alli restored parity with a well taken shot in the 36th minute.
Full backs, Chris Madaki and Ifeanyi Nweke scored the second and third for Kano Pillars in quick succession in the second half to take game beyond Enyimba while Nwagua Nyima put the icing on the cake minutes later.
Sunday Adetunji rallied one back late in the game for Enyimba but it was only good enough for a consolation.
The defeat thus compounds Enyimba’s problem; who will now have to negotiate a way past Raja Casablanca in order to stand a chance of continental football next season.
Meanwhile, Kano Pillars will return to Lagos to face northwest rivals, Katsina United in one of the semifinal ties at the Agege township stadium on Wednesday.
The other semifinal clash would be contested between Enugu Rangers and Nasarawa United in Kano on Wednesday as well.
