Equatorial Guinea coach Rodolfo Diaz Bodipo is positive his country will end the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco with a shock result against Nigeria.
Equatorial Guinea will face Nigeria on Tuesday night in the last Group C match at the Grand Agadir Stadium at 7pm. They can no longer progress to the next stage of the tournament after they suffered two consecutive defeats in their opening group matches, while Nigeria are in need of just a point to progress to the quarter-final.
A 3-0 defeat to Libya in their opening group match, followed by a 1-0 loss to Rwanda ensured Equatorial Guinea who came to the CHAN with the youngest squad of the competition with four players aged 17 will return home after the group stage matches comes to a close.
“We came to the tournament with young players to build a future for our country, we knew it will be difficult for us to compete with the big teams but we are happy with the progress,” Bodipo said in his pre-match press conference.
“Our young players had issues in our first game and I think we got better in the second game. We have accumulated the experience and this team will be better in the future, we are also working to finish the tournament with a big statement.’
Bodipo added Equatorial Guinea are motivated to shock Nigeria and hope to exit the tournament on a high.
“We are prepared for the game, we had huge motivation because we are playing against a big team. We hope to pull a shocker and end the tournament with a positive result.
“We want to win this game and we are willing to finish with a top result, we have the team to show up and compete against Nigeria.”
