Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has on Monday confirmed Atletico Madrid’s ultra-new Estadio Wanda Metropolitano will be the stadium to host the Copa Dey Rey final between Barcelona and Sevilla.
The 68,000 capacity gleaming dome, which opened 5 months ago, will host the final on Saturday, 21 April 2018 with kick off time still to be announced.
The decision means Atletico’s home game with Betis in La Liga, scheduled for that weekend, will have to be moved.
Barcelona’s home game with Villarreal and the match between Sevilla and Real Madrid have already been moved from to Wednesday, May 9.
The stadium called ‘Wanda’ seemed an inevitable option for the final, with Real Madrid less likely to agree to the final being hosted at the 81,000-capacity Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.
Barcelona has won three consecutive Copa and advanced into a record 5th consecutive final with the win over Valencia while Sevilla saw off Leganes.
It shouldn’t be forgotten that the Wanda Metropolitano will host next season’s Champions League final.
