Welcome to Sunday’s Nigerian players based abroad scorecard, we bring you the summary action of our foreign exports.
England – Premier League
Liverpool shot to the top of the league table after smashing four unreplied goals against West Ham who featured Italian born defender of Nigerian decent Angelo Ogbonna for the entirety of the match.
Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi was an unused substitute for Arsenal who lost their first game under new coach Unai Emery 0-2 to reigning champions Manchester City at the Emirate Stadium
Switzerland – Super League
FC Zuerich started with former MFM top shot Stephen Odey in their 0-0 draw at home to St. Gallenbut Fc.
The young striker only lasted 37 minutes with Benjamin Kololli coming to replace him after he suffered an injury.
Sweden – Allsvenskan
Former Enyimba Fc left back Chima Akas went the distance for Kalmar FF in a match they lost 0-2 to Oestersunds FK.
Akas, Nigerian and club teammate Gbenga Arokoyo, was an unused substitute.
Scotland – Premiership
Ex Super Eagles versatile defender Efe Ambrose posted another positive performance for Hibernian’s 1-1 draw away to St.Johnstone.
Ambrose remains an ever presence in the heart of Hibernian defense.
Still in Scotland, young Nigerian forward Umar Sadiq who is on loan at Rangers, came on in the 77th minute for ten men coach Steven Gerrard side to help seal Rangers 2-0 win over St. Mirren.
On loan Liverpool midfielder Ojo Ejaria was impressive in midfield for Rangers as he clocked full 90’minutes.
Norway – Eliteserien
Sarpsborg 08 did not have to call former Flying Eagles defender Mohammed Usman off the bench as they battled to a 1-0 win over Lillestroem.
Striker Anthony Omoijuanfo was in action for the whole duration for Stabaek Fc 1-1 draw away to Rosenborg.
The striker could not find the back of the net but was pivotal in helping his team grab a point.
France – Ligue 1
Bordeaux lost their league opener 0-2 at home to Strasbourg Fc, but new signing Samuel Kalu will still have to wait for his debut as he was not included in the match day squad.
Russia – Premier League
Super Eagles left back Brian Idowu’s move to Lokomotiv Moscow is currently not paying off as he continues to be relegated to the bench, this time he watched from the sidelines as the capital club lost 0-1 away to FC Orenburg.
Finland – Veikkausliiga
Former Super Eagles left back Taye Taiwo came out from RoPS 1-0 win over IFK Mariehamn unscathed.
Taiwo scored a wonderful freekick last week, but did not have the fortune of netting this time.
Turkey – Super Lig
Super Eagles defensive midfielder Ogenyi Onazi was on for 90’minutes in the colours of Trabzonspor, but their season’s opening game ended in a 0-2 loss away to Istanbul Basaksehir.
Onazi was yellow carded in the 79th minute after committing a foul challenge.
Denmark – Superligaen
Nigerian striking duo of Paul Onauchu and Simon Okosun were in action as they both led the lines for FC Midtjylland as they ran out 3-0 winners over visiting AC Horsens.
Onauchu coming of his two goals exploit in the Europa League got a 25th minute yellow card, but laid a 47th minute assist for Gustav Wikheim before he was pulled out nine minutes later.
His strike partner Okosun however saw full action, but there was no place for the third Nigerian in the team, Frank Onyeka, who only watched on from the bench.
Belgium – First Division AA
On loan Liverpool striker at Gent, Taiwo Awoniyi continued to struggle in front of goal even though his team ran out 4-1 winners over Waasland-Beveren.
Awoniyi failed to find his range before he was withdrawn in the 71st minute.
