Euro Wrap: Assist for Olayinka, strong display from Ambrose and Awaziem


We take another trip around various football centers across Europe to bring you the action summary of Nigerian players performances.


Veteran Nigerian defender Efe Ambrose denied his former club Celtic from been crowned champions of the Scottish premier League after a solid display in defense helped his side Hibernian triumph 2-1 over the cup holders.

Sweden – Allsvenskan

Nigerian forward Alhaji Gero was on for 90 minutes but his
Oestersunds FK side were shockingly beaten 0-2 by Oerebro in their own home turf.

Turkey – Super Lig

Nigerian striker Sadiq Umar only came on as a 71st minute substitute to replace Musa Cagiran, but he produced two assists for Adrien Regattin in the 74th and Serdar Gurler in the 77th minutes to help Osmanlispor  trash Genclerbirligi by 3-0.

Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi might be back training following an injury lay off, he was however not deemed fit enough to be listed in the Trabzonspor squad that lost 0-2 at home to Sivasspor.

Super Eagles duo of defender Troost Ekong and midfielder Mikel Agu were both dropped to the bench for Bursaspor, but right back Shehu Abdullahi got the nod to start and dully helped Bursaspor to a 4-1 win against ten men Karabukspor. Shehu was booked in the 70th minute but still saw full action.

Belgium – League playoffs

Nigerian striker Peter Olayinka yet again provided another assist in Zulte-Waregem 3-0 win over Kortrijk.

Olayinka laid a 83rd minute assist for Onur Kaya for the third goal that sunk Abduljaleel Ajagun and his Kortrijk teammates, before getting subbed off in the 89th minute.

France – Ligue 1

There was a return for Super Eagles central defender Chidozie Awaziem for 10 men Nantes in a 1-1 draw against visiting Rennes on Friday night.

Awaziem was impressive in his full shift output for Claudio Ranieri’s men.

England – Championship

There should be some concern for Super Eagles right back Ola Aina who was replaced by English born defender of Nigerian descent Fikayo Tomori for Hull City in the 46th minute as they played out a very highly entertaining 5-5 draw away to Bristol City.


Super Eagles striker on loan from man City, Kayode Olarenwaju saw full action for Shakhtar Donetsk’s 4-2 win over Vorskla in Saturday’s league match.

Kayode failed to replicate his cup goal scoring form in midweek.
