Europe’s second tier club competition took centre stage on Thursday night and so did Nigerian players for their clubs. Here’s a breakdown of how they fared.

Anthony Nwakaeme/John Ogu (Hapoel Beer Sheva)

While Super Eagles midfielder John Ogu started for the Isreali champions, his national and club team-mate Anthony  Nwakaeme was introduced in the 62nd minute. He duly announced his introduction as he equalised for Hapoel in the 69th minute before they eventually lost 1-3 to host Viktoria Plzen.

Alhaji Gero (Öestersunds)

Alhaji Gero was in superlative form for his Swedish side Oestersunds Fc who beat Hertha Berlin of Germany 1-0 to pick up their second win in two games of their group after a 2-0 success over Ukrainian side Zorya on matchday one. With Gero scoring in that fixture.

Gero was on for the entire 90 minutes of the win over Hertha and was a delight for his team while been a menace to the opposition.

Friday Eze (Koyanspor)

Nigerian international Friday Eze recorded an assist to his name in the 24th minute for his Turkish side Konyaspor in their 2-0 win over Vitoria Guimaraes of Portugal.

Eze was booked in the 62nd minute and played the entire match. But his Nigerian team-mate Imoh Ezekiel was yet again an unused substitute after sitting out the weekend’s league game.

Peter Olayinka (Zulte- Waregem)

Nigerian striker Peter was sent on as a 46th minute substitute but could not stop his team losing 0-2 at the Olympic stadium to  Italian side Lazio.

Alhassan Ibrahim (Austria Wien)

Former Akwa United midfielder Alhassan Ibrahim was booked in the 15th minute before getting subbed off in the 60th minute as his team Austria Wien were forced to a 2-2 draw away to AEK Athens of Greece.

Chuba Akpom/Alex Iwobi (Arsenal)

Chuba Akpom failed to get any playing time for Arsenal despite nine changes made by manager Arsene Wenger to the side that beat Bate Borisov 4-2 away from home.

Akpom was an unused substitute while Alex Iwobi did not travel with the team as he continues to nurse an injury that kept him out of Monday night’s league win over West Brom.
