Captain of Enyimba International football club Mfon Udoh has said if his club are to challenge for the NPFL title they need to be ‘United’.
The striker who spoke with naijafootballplus.com Dehinbo Timothy in an interview also spoke about how disappointed he was to finish seven goals behind last season’s top scorer Anthony Okpotu. Here are excerpts of the interview
NFP: How would you rate Enyimba’s 2016/2017 season having qualified for the CAF Confederations Cup?
Udoh: “The season ended with the position we never wanted but I will still say it was a successful season playing away from home and earning a continental slot, that’s a great feat.”
NFP: You became captain of the Enyimba team last season after veteran defender Chinedu Udoji’s surprise departure to Pillars. How has it been for you as skipper of the Peoples Elephant?
Udoh: “Hmm… It was a new and fresh responsibility being the leader of a group of players. Being the captain was just like serving the players and also being a role model to them. You act and they follow. It was difficult but cool.”
NFP: How was the relationship like under Coach Ogunbote with the players and what his reaction was like when the team was not performing well?
Udoh: “Well, the relationship between coach Ogunbote and the players was mutual. Every coach is not happy when his team lose a game, but then, he will scold us for the mistakes we did and we’ll go back to training and amend our errors.”
NFP: You scored 12 league goals last season, 7 behind Tony Okpotu, though you missed a couple of games, how do you feel about it? Have you set any goal target for the upcoming season?
Udoh: I felt bad I did not score more goals because I think I didn’t play to my potentials but that’s the game of football for you. No target for next season yet. I Just want to work hard and do well.”
NFP: What must Enyimba do differently, if they are to win the NPFL this season under Paul Aigbogun?
Udoh: “If they are to win the NPFL or a trophy this year, then they have to stay United, focused and more determined. Work extra hard, be dedicated and prayerful.”
NFP: Do you see the Nigerian contingent of Enyimba, MFM, plateau and Akwa doing well on the continent next season?
Udoh: “Yes I do believe so, all the teams that qualified to the continent deserved it and worth playing there, so doing well on the continent next season by the teams is of certitude.”
NFP: Nigeria will be at the CHAN 2018 in Morocco. Do you see the team winning the trophy? Having not won it before? And your expectation of making the team?
Udoh: “Nigeria has a lot of good players in our domestic league which gives me the believe that we’ll bring back the trophy. It will be my pleasure to make the team but then, our able and fair coaches have the final decision to make.”
NFP: Thanks for this exclusive interview with naijafootballplus.com and goodluck on the upcoming season
Udoh: Thanks for having me, it’s my pleasure!!!.
