FC Ifeanyi Ubah goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa has been told to “work harder” by Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles Gernot Rohr.
Ezenwa who kept goal for Nigeria against Cameroon was one of the outstanding players for the Super Eagles in the doubleheader against the Indomitable Lions in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
His brilliant performances has drawn endless praises from Nigerians, but national team boss Gernot Rohr was quick to point out that Ezenwa was only the fourth choice goalkeeper in the Super Eagles roaster.
“You know that he’s our 4th goalkeeper, the three other ones you know…Enyeama is injured and cannot play, Carl Ikeme is sick and we are praying for him, Akpeyi is also injured, so it was a problem for us going into this fixture,” Rohr said as reported by vanguard sports.
Rohr while acknowledging Ezenwa’s confidence boosting display in what was a mini goalkeeping crisis ahead of the matches against Cameroon also urged the captain of the CHAN Eagles to work hard to keep his place in the team.
“You can say he did very well; he must work harder now. We have two goalkeeper trainers to help him improve more, but overall, he did brilliantly well and also he played well for the CHAN team against Benin, so I am excited that he will deliver for the team when called upon,” Rohr concluded.
It will be recalled that Ezenwa captained the home based Eagles popularly called CHAN Eagles to a 2-1 aggregate win over Benin republic, saving a crucial penalty that would have knocked Nigeria out of the tournament.
