Ezenwa to start against Cameroon, Akpeyi injured

Super Eagles Technical Adviser Gernot Rohr has confirmed FC Ifeanyi Ubah and CHAN Eagles goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa will start in goal against Cameroon on Friday ahead of Daniel Akpeyi.

Chippa United goalkeeper, Akpeyi has been ruled out of the World Cup qualifier against the Indomitable Lions due to injury sustained in training on Tuesday.

Ezenwa’s stand-out performances in goal for the Home based Super Eagles in the African Nations Championship qualifier against Benin Republic earlier this month, was enough to convince Rohr to choose him ahead of Dele Alampasu.

“We have three problems in the goalkeeping position,” said Rohr during the Super Eagles press conference.

“Vincent Enyeama is injured and not with us at the moment. So also is Carl (Ikeme) who we are supporting. Daniel Akpeyi came with injury and also go injured yesterday (Tuesday).

“So this man from Nigeria (league), Ezenwa will start.”

Meanwhile Rohr has called up Plateau United goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye to replace the injured Akpeyi.

Nigeria will play Cameroon on Friday in Uyo, in a FIFA 2018 World Cup qualifier.
