Go Round FC returned to the top of the Nigeria National League table as they beat Abia Comets 2-0.
Both goals were scored in the first half, captain, Nelson Esor converting a penalty in the 13th minute and George Vincent curling a free kick home in the 33rd minute.
It was Daniel Mark who handled the ball in the box in the 12th minute for the penalty that Nelson Esor coolly tucked in beyond the reach of goalkeeper Ikenna Benjamin.
In the 31st minute Onyirumba Odinaka was brought down at the edge of the penalty area and George Vincent stepped up to take the kick.
What looked like an innocuous curling effort was let in by Benjamin.
After he seemed to have caught the ball, it slipped through his hands to go in.
Both sides did not seem interested in scoring from that point on as there were very few shots on target there after.
President of Abia Comets, Victor Nwakama did not care much about the result.
“Forget about the two goals. That’s the game of football. Losing two zero does not mean we did not play well. We both played well but they capitalised on the chances they got in the first half,” Nwakama said.
Ngozi Elechi commended his players for the victory and clean sheet but blamed the poor second half on fatigue.
“On our return from Ikom we had two flat tyres and arrived here at midnight.
“Though I was disappointed in the second half, I had to look at what happened and saw the players were fatigued so we made adjustments in the second half,” Elechi said.
Go Round FC will start their race in the Rivers State FA Cup against Rivers United Academy during the week before going to Uyo for a date against Akwa Starlets next weekend.
