Nigeria Professional Football League club Gombe United have been relegated to Nigeria’s second tier division after a 0-3 defeat at the hands of Rivers United left them with no possible chance of staying up.
The Desert Scorpions went into their penultimate NPFL matchday four points adrift of safety and still with a chance of staying up.
But a brace from Bernard Ovoke from the penalty spot and a belter from substitute Bolaji Sakin dimmed Gombe United’s slim hopes of survival.
They were one of four sides promoted to the NPFL last season, but a mixture of poor management and patchy performances have contributed in the club failing to retain their league status.
After 37 matchdays, Gombe United have only managed to garner 43 points.
They play host to Wikki Tourists in the final day of the season with only pride and an opportunity to treat their supporters to a final game in the top flight left to play for.
