Ideye’s brace hands Martins’ Shanghai Shenhua heartbreaking defeat

The two Super Eagles players came face to face in a 12th round game of the 2017 Chinese Super League on Friday, when Tianjin Teda who pays the wages of injured Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi and Brown Ideye hosted Shanghai Shenhua who has on their pay roll former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins.

In a keenly contested encounter, Brown Ideye scored a brace to cancel out Obafemi Martins’ earlier opener. Martins opened the scoring in the 11th minute after good footwork from Giovani Andres Moreno.

The hardwork of the home side Tianjin Teda paid off in the 36th minute through Brown Ideye. The Nigerian scored from a Nemanja Gudelj assist.

When it looked like the game will end up all square, former Ocean boys striker, Ideye received a cross from home boy Yuanyi Li, held off his marker with his back to goal producing a swift turn and swiveled the ball into the net in the 89th minute to net the winner in the 89th minute with an assist .

Expectedly, Super Eagles skipper John Mikel Obi missed the game due to the surgery he had in April, though he has started training but he was not certified fit for the encounter.

Ideye was omitted from the Super Eagles list of players that played in the friendlies against Corsica and Togo recently and will also not be in the squad that will face South Africa on June 10 in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.
