Akwa United midfielder Ifeanyi Ifeanyi is optimistic the Promise Keepers can continue their fine form as they prepare to face his boyhood club and the league leaders MFM FC in a Matchday 19 fixture of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) at the Nest of Champions, Uyo on Wednesday.
Smarting from their back-to-back victories and the shock win against Kano Pillars away from home, Akwa United are currently fifth on the NPFL table with 26 points from 18 matches, they are seven points behind visitors MFM who sits top of the table.
Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, a former Flying Eagles midfielder started his career at MFM in Lagos where he spent four years with the Olukoya Boys. He was part of the squad that won promotion from the second division and played in their debut season in the NPFL. He went on to represent the Nigeria at the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup.
Ifeanyi moved to Akwa United during the off-season transfer window in 2016 and he has been a big figure for the Promise Keepers featuring in almost all their league matches this season.
“The game will be emotional for me, I am happy playing against my former club because I will get to meet my old friends and teammates that I haven’t seen for sometime now. I am glad I will have the opportunity to prove that my game has improved under Coach Abdu Maikaba,” said Ifeanyi to Naijafootballplus.com.
Ifeanyi says he is not sure if he would celebrate or not if he scores against his former side, MFM.
“If I get to score, I don’t know if I will celebrate or not. We have to wait and see in the game. Scoring isn’t my priority but for us to win the game and compliments our previous performance,” he added.
“We want to finish the first stanza in a good position. MFM will make it a difficult game for us, they are the league leaders and I know how solid they can be on their day.
“However, we will ensure to secure the victory. It is as important as they want to keep their top spot status. I am optimistic and confident, it won’t be easy but I think we are the favourites to come out victorious in the game.”
