As the match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and their counterpart from Serbia approaches, Serbia coach Mladen Krtajic has stripped former Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic of his position as national team captain.

Krtajic announced former Manchester city and As Roma defender Alexander Kolarov as the new captain and he is to be assisted by Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic.

The Serbia coach informed that uncertainty over Ivanovic making it as part of the final World Cup team to Russia is the major reason the Zenit St Petersburg defender has been striped of the armband.

“The captain of the national team will be Kolarov, and his deputy Matic. That’s my idea. I talked to former captain Ivanovic,” Krstajic told kurir.rs .

“He gave a lot to the national team and he remains with us. I spoke with Branislav openly, and these are some things that are solved internally.”

Serbia will play against Morocco on March 23 before taking on Nigeria in London four days later.

“I do not hide the game system, but it will not change in relation to the previous one. Only some players will change.

“The most important thing is to make a good atmosphere, every match is important for us, because Serbia expects the best of us. We live in a country that is hungry for success.”

Nigeria’s super Eagles and Serbia has never meet at full international level in the past.
