La Liga: Real and Barça continue perfect starts, Atletico shocked at Celta

For all the talk of Real Madrid entering this season on the back foot, the European champions have begun in sprightly fashion, with three league wins from three. Surely, bigger tests will come and how they fare without Cristiano Ronaldo still remains a relatively untested theory, but you can’t have too many wins.

It took 17 minutes for Los Blancos to find the net against Leganes, a dominant period was capped off when Dani Carvajal’s pull-back was volleyed home by Gareth Bale, the Welshman’s seventh goal in as many games. But Leganes would strike back seven minutes after, Casemiro guilty of fouling Javier Eraso in the box, and Andre Carrillo slotted the resulting penalty past debuting Real goalie Thibaut Courtois.

It stayed level till halftime, but three minutes after the interval, Karim Benzema headed home Marcelo’s cross to put Real back in front. That goal meant the Frenchman has now scored against every side he’s faced in La Liga, and he added another just after the hour mark.

The win was sealed with just over 20 minutes to go, when Marco Asensio won yet another penalty for Los Blancos, and Sergio Ramos stepped up to add a fourth. Real continue their 100% record in the league.

The only other side with three wins from three are Real’s rivals and holders Barcelona, who recovered from an early setback to put eight past Huesca. Huesca took a surprise lead after just three minutes through Cucho Hernandez, but goals from Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, either side of a Jorge Pulido own goal, put the champions 3-1 up.

Huesca gave themselves a glimmer of hope by reducing the deficit before halftime through Alex Gallar, but second half goals from Ousmane Dembele, Ivan Rakitic and Jordi Alba, as well as Messi and Suarez completing their braces, meant a rout for Ernesto Valverde’s side.

Elsewhere, Atletico Madrid were stunned at Celta Vigo, in a game where they saw defender Stefan Savic get sent off, while Cristhian Stuani gave Girona their first win of the season at Villarreal.

Betis won the Seville derby thanks to a late Joaquin winner, Eibar needed a stoppage time goal to beat Sociedad, and Valencia’s search for a league win continues after a 2-2 draw at neighbours Levante.
