Four times champion, Kano Pillars missed the chance to go top of the Nigeria Professional Football League table following a 1-1 draw at home against seven times champions Enyimba of Aba in a week nine cracker at the Sani Abacha stadium, Kano.
Red hot goal poacher, Junior Lokosa gave Pillars the lead in the 35th minute of the game but an unfortunate own goal by Emmanuel Anyanwu generously leveled up matters before the break.
Off the back of five unbeaten games, Coach Ibrahim Musa made one change to his starting line up, Masu Gida captain, Rabiu Alli who just returned from the CHAN tournament in Morocco made the cut in place of Sikiru Kamal.
Paul Aigbogun, also unbeaten in five games made two changes to the side that beat Plateau United in their last game with Dare Ojo and Austin Oladapo making the starting line up in place of Freedom Omofoman and Uche John.
Pillars’ urgent approach to the game was well stemmed down by the People’s elephant as both teams struggled for rhythm in the early stages of proceedings.
The arena however came to life after half an hour, when Lokosa exploited a narrow space to break the deadlock and increase his tally to eight goals in nine matches this season. The talisman beat the offside trap cleverly and then buried Nzube Anaezemba’s pass from a quickly taken free-kick into the bottom right corner of Fatau Dauda’s goal.
Five minutes later, Pillars gifted Enyimba the equalizer, no thanks to an unfortunate own goal by Emmanuel Anyanwu. The defender did a back pass into his box and goalkeeper David Obiozo, apparently not under pressure miscalculated the pass and the ball rolled away slowly into the net.
The home team attempted to regain the lead in the second 45 minutes but Fatau Dauda stood gallantly between the sticks to deny Ibrahim Alhasan, Nzube Anaezemba and Rabiu Ali from close range. The closest Pillars was to scoring without the goalie getting a hand on the ball was Dennis Victor’s attempted cross which rattled the crossbar in the 59th minute.
Kano Pillars climb up to second on the log with 16 points from nine matches, while Enyimba are now 4th with 14 points from the same number of matches.
