Matchday 20 Roundup: Rangers leave it late, MFM held at home

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Matchday 20 produced amazing results as the league resumed after its mid-season break. The weekend recorded three away victories and the 10 fixtures produced 18 goals.

League leaders Plateau United maintained​ their lead in the NPFL table after an important draw at Katsina United. MFM FC and El-Kanemi Warriors dropped points while FC Ifeanyi Ubah moved into the top four with a shock win away from home.

Rivers United pipped Niger Tornadoes 1-0 on Saturday, Ayo Saka’s 39th minute strike ensured 10-man United earned the maximum points.

Obaje scored his seventh league goal of the season to lead FC Ifeanyi to a first away win of the season

FC Ifeanyi Ubah recorded the biggest win at the weekend against Shooting Stars. The Anambra Warriors spanked their hosts 0-3 at the Lekan Salami Stadium. Godwin Obaje opened scores in the second minute, Seka Pascal doubled the lead in the 15th minute while King Osanga scored the third late in the second half to stun the home side.

Ugo Leonard’s​ first half goal was enough for seven-time NPFL champions Enyimba International to record an away win at Remo Stars. Their first of the league season.

Newly appointed Sunshine Stars Technical Adviser, Austin Eguavoen tasted hid first defeat as coach of the side in the league. Kingsley Eduwo’s 38th minute goal sank the host team at the Akure Township Stadium.

In Lagos, MFM FC failed to win at home for the first time this season as Akwa United held the Olukoya Boys to a goalless draw at the Soccer Temple, Agege. Stephen Odey missed a penalty kick and ruined his side’s opportunity to catch up with Plateau United at the top.

Plateau United came from behind and earned an important point at Kastina United. United scored first in the fourth minute through Chinedu Udechukwu but Daniel Itodo leveled scores for the visitors in the second half. The league leaders held on as the game ended 1-1.

Akwa United held MFM to a goalless draw at the Agege stadium

Ebuka Okeke saved the day for champions Rangers International at the Cathedral, the flying Antelopes came from a goal down to win 2-1. Gombe United took a shock lead through new import from Shooting Stars Abdulwaheed Afolabi. Godwin Aguda then headed in the equalizer from Osas Okoro’s freekick in the first half. With the clock ticking, Gombe United’s hopes of getting a point was dashed when Okeke scored a late winner in the last seconds of additional time.

Wikki Tourists’ newly appointed manager Bala Nikyu began his new job with an emphatic 3-0 win against Abia Warriors. Ahmed Usman opened scoring in the 9th minute, Chukwudi Samuel doubled the lead from the spot in the 25th minute while Kabiru Mohammed completed the victory in the second half.

Promoted side, ABS FC defeated title contender El-kanemi Warriors 2-1 at the Ilorin Township Stadium. ABS took the lead through Kehind Ayinde in the 14th minute but Dele Olorundare leveled scores for the visitors with five minutes left to play in the first half. ABS resumed the second half as the better side and finally got the winner through Anaekwe Ebuka’s 70th minute goal.

Kano Pillars new import Junior Lokosa scored the winning goal for his side in his debut game. Lokosa first half goal was enough for Pillars to edge Niger Tornadoes 1-0.
