Chinese Super League: Mikel, Ighalo start new league season with draw

Action resumed in the 2018 Chinese Super League season and Nigeria players plying their trade on the Chinese soil were not left out as they represented their various clubs.

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo was in action for his club Changchun Yatai as they recorded an away point at Shanghai Shenhua.

Striker Obafemi Martins was surprisingly not in action for Shenhua after taking part in the Chinese Super Cup a week ago. Oscar Romero opened the scoring for Shenhua in the 28th minute before Fan Xiaodong leveled scores in the 62nd minute.

Ighalo helped Yatai finish seventh last season as he contributed 15 goals while Martins helped Shenhua to FA cup victory.

Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi was in action on Saturday for his club Tianjin Teda who were forced to a 1-1 draw by visiting Hebei China Fortune.

The ex Chelsea player was in action for the whole duration of the game as he pulled the strings from the centre of midfield.

Jiakang Hui scored for Tianjin Teda who played in front of their home crowd in the 25th minute of the keenly contested encounter via a fantastic left foot finnish.

Chengdong Zhang equalized in the 86 minutes of the game to end it at 1-1.

Ighalo’s Yatai will be guests of league champions Guangzhou Evergrande in the next game, while Obafemi Martins and his Shanghai Shenhua team play city rivals Shanghai SIPG.

John Mikel’s Tianjin Teda will travel to face Henan Jiaye in round 2 of the Chinese Super League.
