Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has revealed that his Russian wife is happy
to see Nigeria qualify to the 2018 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Russia next summer.
Mikel who has a Russian wife with twin girls, said he is happy his country will play in front of his family and in-laws at the World Cup in Russia next year.
“She is happy we made it to Russia, she travelled with the kids two days ago to Russia and we spoke before the game, she was hopeful we’ll make it to the World Cup.
My family will be at the World Cup and I will be glad to see my country play in front of my family and in-laws,” said Mikel.
Nigeria defeated Zambia 1-0 on Saturday night at the Nest of Champions in Uyo to book the World Cup ticket, Courtsey of Alex Iwobi who came off the bench to score the winner for the Super Eagles.
Mikel added; “It was my aim and objective to lead Nigeria to Russia, we started over a year ago. We are happy to qualify for the amazing tournament, playing at the World Cup is a big dream.
“Majority of players in this squad have not been to the World Cup, the hunger to achieve this was in the team and the group put a lot into the game.
“It was a difficult game and we played against a physical side, I am honoured to lead the team to the World Cup. It was a collective effort, we had a great team with experience and amazing coaches.”
